JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Environmental Officer
Job Grade: SGR 6A
Number of Vacancies: One (1)
Terms: Contract (Four Years)
Reports To: Senior Environmental Officer
Job Purpose
To support the implementation, supervision, and monitoring of environmental safeguards for the SGR Project in accordance with national regulations, institutional policies, and international environmental standards.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct site audits, inspections, and training for contractors to ensure compliance with environmental management requirements.
- Identify and report changes or updates in environmental legislation and ensure their integration into project operations.
- Support the Senior Environmental Officer in investigating and documenting environmental incidents and recommending corrective measures.
- Provide on-site environmental advice and mentorship to project staff and contractors to minimize risks and resolve environmental issues.
- Contribute environmental input to design, procurement, and tender review processes to ensure alignment with environmental best practices.
- Monitor and evaluate compliance with environmental policies, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide technical support to the engineering and survey teams in integrating environmental safeguards into field operations.
- Prepare and update Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), checklists, and site-specific environmental action plans.
- Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Person Specifications
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree (Honours) in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Botany and Zoology, Geography, Forestry, or a related discipline.
Experience
- A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in environmental supervision, monitoring, and reporting on large infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated experience in applying environmental safeguards and management systems on construction or transport projects is an added advantage.
Competencies
- Proficiency in environmental data collection and reporting tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- High ethical standards, integrity, and results-oriented approach.
- Computer literacy and familiarity with environmental management software and MS Office applications.
